Mount Moiwa

Mount Moiwa rises 531 metres south-west of Sapporo and offers one of Japan's three finest night panoramas. A ropeway and mini-cable car lead to the summit, where the city unfolds like a carpet of twinkling lights stretching to Ishikari Bay. Its slopes shelter a virgin forest protected since 1921.

The Sapporo Snow Festival, started in 1950, is Japan's largest winter event, drawing over 2 million visitors each year. For one week in early February, Odori Park, the Tsudome site and Susukino Street host nearly 200 monumental ice and snow sculptures. Some pieces exceed 15 metres in height and recreate world landmarks and folklore characters.

Perché regalare una mappa stellare di Sapporo?

Il cielo di Sapporo

At 43° north latitude, Sapporo offers a remarkable northern sky where boreal constellations such as Cassiopeia and the Little Bear sit high overhead. The cold, dry air of winter nights makes atmospheric transparency exceptional. The Sapporo Salmon Museum planetarium, a few kilometres from the centre, is a landmark for the region's amateur astronomers.
