Archaeological Museum (Ötzi)

The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, inaugurated in 1998, houses the mummy of Ötzi, the Iceman discovered in 1991 in the Similaun glacier at 3,210 metres altitude. Aged 5,300 years, Ötzi is preserved in a cold chamber at -6°C that simulates the conditions of the glacier where he was found.

Piazza Walther, the heart of Bolzano since 1808, owes its name to the medieval poet Walther von der Vogelweide whose statue has stood at its centre since 1889.
