The Walls of Lucca, built between 1504 and 1648, are among Europe's most complete Renaissance fortifications and the only ones still intact in Italy. 4.2 kilometres long and 30 metres wide at the top, they were transformed in the 19th century into a tree-lined promenade by the Austrian occupation, offering a unique pedestrian loop above the rooftops.
