Kumamoto Castle

Kumamoto Castle, built between 1601 and 1607 by Katō Kiyomasa, is one of Japan's three largest castles. Its ramparts angled at over 60 degrees, designed to prevent attackers from climbing, have become emblematic. Severely damaged by the April 2016 earthquakes, the main keep was restored and reopened to the public in 2021, while work on the other buildings continues.
Suizenji Garden

Suizenji Garden, laid out in 1636 by lord Hosokawa Tadatoshi, recreates in miniature the 53 stations of the Tōkaidō road linking Kyoto to Edo.
