Key Stars

Aldebaran

Alpha Tauri, the eye of the Bull (magnitude 0.85). This red-orange giant 65 light-years away is the 14th brightest star in the sky. Its Arabic name means 'the follower', as it appears to chase the Pleiades across the heavens. Its coppery hue is visible to the naked eye.

Elnath

Beta Tauri (magnitude 1.65), the tip of the Bull's northern horn. This blue giant 134 light-years away is shared between Taurus and Auriga. Its Arabic name means 'the one who butts', evoking the power of the celestial bull.

Alcyone

The brightest star of the Pleiades (magnitude 2.87). This blue-white giant 440 light-years away is the heart of the famous open cluster, visible to the naked eye as a small group of six or seven stars. Named after Alcyone, one of the seven daughters of Atlas in Greek mythology.

Mythology

In Greek mythology, Taurus is associated with Zeus himself, who took the form of a magnificent white bull to court the princess Europa. Captivated by the animal's beauty and gentleness, Europa climbed onto its back. Zeus then carried her across the sea to Crete, where Europa gave her name to an entire continent. The bull was placed among the stars as a memorial of this divine transformation.

The Taurus constellation is one of the oldest recognized by humanity. Cave paintings at Lascaux, dating back 17,000 years, depict a bull whose spot pattern may correspond to the Pleiades cluster and the star Aldebaran. The Sumerians called it 'the Bull of Heaven', and in the Epic of Gilgamesh, the goddess Ishtar sent the Celestial Bull to fight the hero who had spurned her advances.

The Pleiades, that cluster of seven stars nestled within Taurus, carry their own mythology. They represent the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione, transformed into stars by Zeus to protect them from the hunter Orion. To this day, Orion appears to chase the Pleiades across the night sky in an eternal celestial hunt.

When to observe

The Taurus constellation is visible in the Northern Hemisphere from November to March, culminating in January. Aldebaran, its orange eye, is easily found by extending the line of Orion's Belt to the northwest. The Pleiades form a shimmering cluster visible to the naked eye above Aldebaran.
