What is a star map?
A personalized star map is a scientifically accurate poster showing the exact positions of up to 8,921 stars as they appeared in the night sky from any location on Earth, at any date between 1900 and 2100. Each map is generated using the HYG v4.2 star catalog (derived from the European Space Agency's Hipparcos mission) and IAU astronomical algorithms for sidereal time calculation. The result is a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork that captures the sky of a moment that matters — a wedding, a birth, an anniversary.
Are the star positions accurate?
Yes, we use the HYG catalog (Hipparcos, Yale, Gliese) containing over 100,000 stars with verified astronomical data. Calculations are based on IAU-standard algorithms for sidereal time and stereographic projection. Accuracy is verified by 238 automated tests against known astronomical values.
What occasions are star maps good for?
Star maps are perfect for births, weddings, anniversaries, first dates, engagements, or any important moment. It's a unique and personal gift that captures the beauty of the sky at a precise moment.
What formats are available?
We offer a digital download (12,00 €) and printed posters in 4 sizes: US Letter, A2, 16×20 inches and 18×24 inches. All files are in high resolution.
Can I choose any date?

How much does a personalized star map cost?
OwnStarMap offers personalized star maps starting from €12 for an instant digital download (high-resolution PNG). Printed posters on museum-quality paper range from €29 (A4) to €69 (18×24 inches). A Pack 2+1 lets you create 3 star maps for the price of 2. All maps include a free real-time preview before purchase.
How accurate are personalized star maps?
OwnStarMap uses the HYG v4.2 star catalog, which combines data from the European Space Agency's Hipparcos satellite, the Yale Bright Star Catalog, and the Gliese Catalog of Nearby Stars. This catalog contains 8,921 stars visible to the naked eye (magnitude 6.5 or brighter). Star positions are calculated using IAU-standard algorithms for sidereal time and stereographic projection, verified by 238 automated tests against known astronomical values.
What is the difference between a star map and naming a star?
A personalized star map shows the real, scientifically verified positions of thousands of stars as they appeared at a specific moment, based on the HYG v4.2 catalog (European Space Agency data). 'Name a star' services offer symbolic naming with no scientific recognition — the International Astronomical Union does not recognize commercial star naming. A star map is a factual, accurate representation of the sky; star naming is a symbolic gesture.
