Adoption Star Map — The Day Family Became Forever

Both are valid choices in the US adoption community and the right one depends on what your family already celebrates. "Gotcha Day" (the day the child came home — for many families, the literal first night under the same roof) is the more emotionally loaded date and tends to be the one already on the calendar year after year. The finalization date (the day the adoption was legally completed in court) is sometimes a separate event, especially in domestic adoptions where placement and finalization are weeks or months apart. Some families order two prints — one for each date — and hang them side by side. If you can only pick one, ask the adoptive parents which day they already mark; the star map should celebrate the date the family already honors.

For domestic US adoptions, the star map is typically rendered for the city of the placement (the foster home, hospital, or family home where the child was handed over) on Gotcha Day, or for the city of the courthouse on finalization day. For international adoptions, the story usually has two locations: the birth country where the child was met (Ethiopia, China, South Korea, Colombia, etc.) and the US city where the family came home. Many families order two prints — one for each location and date — and frame them as a pair. The international map shows the sky overhead in the birth country at the moment of meeting; the US one shows the sky on Gotcha Day in the new hometown.

The star map is always rendered for the local sidereal time at the location you specify, not a global UTC moment. If your child was met in Ethiopia at noon Addis Ababa time on March 14, and you arrived home in Chicago at 8:00 PM Central on March 16, those are two different skies in two different places — and we render them accurately. You can include both dates and both locations on a single print as a dual inscription, or order separate prints for each. Yes — this is one of the most meaningful adult uses we see. Adoptees in their twenties, thirties, or older order a star map of their own Gotcha Day or finalization date as a way of reclaiming and celebrating the moment that defined their family. Sometimes it's a gift to the adoptive parents on a milestone anniversary; sometimes it's for themselves to hang in their first apartment. For adoptees who only know the approximate date (common in some international placements), use the closest known day — the constellations shift slowly enough that being a day off doesn't materially change the sky.

Many families with two or more adopted children order one star map per child, each for that child's specific Gotcha Day or finalization date, and frame them as a gallery wall. It avoids playing favorites and gives each kid a print that's explicitly their own — "this was the sky the night I came home." Some families instead order a single combined print for an annual "Family Day" they celebrate (a chosen date that honors all the adoptions together), with the children's names as a joint inscription. Both approaches work — the right one depends on whether your family treats each adoption as its own anniversary or merges them into a single yearly celebration.
