The 10 Brightest Stars You Can See From the US Tonight

The Short Answer

From the continental United States, the ten brightest stars visible to the naked eye are, in order: Sirius (magnitude −1.46), Canopus (−0.74, southern US only), Arcturus (−0.05), Vega (0.03), Capella (0.08), Rigel (0.13), Procyon (0.34), Betelgeuse (0.45), Altair (0.77), and Aldebaran (0.85). Apparent magnitude works backward — lower numbers mean brighter stars. Whether you can see each one tonight still depends on latitude, season, time, horizon and weather. Below is a field guide for checking them from your location.

How Star Brightness Works

A quick primer. Apparent magnitude measures how bright a star looks from Earth on a logarithmic scale where each step of 1 represents about 2.5× the brightness difference. Negative numbers are brighter; the full moon registers around −12.7. The faintest naked-eye stars reach about magnitude 6.5. Brightness depends on intrinsic luminosity and distance — some stars here are nearby and modest (Procyon), others are distant supergiants (Canopus, Rigel).

1. Sirius (Magnitude −1.46) — The Brightest Star in the Sky

Constellation: Canis Major (the Greater Dog). Sirius is unmistakable — the brightest star in the entire night sky, burning with a white-blue hue. From the US, look low in the southern sky on winter and early spring evenings; it follows Orion like a faithful dog.

Best season: December through April, peaking in February. Cultural note: Ancient Egyptians timed the flooding of the Nile to its heliacal rising; the Greeks called it the "Dog Star," giving us the "dog days" of summer.

2. Canopus (Magnitude −0.74) — The Southern Giant

Constellation: Carina (the Keel). The second-brightest star in the sky, but only barely visible from the southern continental US. From Miami, San Antonio, or San Diego, catch it just above the southern horizon in late winter. From anywhere north of Atlanta, it never rises.

Best season (southern US): February evenings. Cultural note: Named after the pilot of King Menelaus's ship in the Odyssey.

3. Arcturus (Magnitude −0.05) — The Spring Beacon

Constellation: Boötes (the Herdsman). Arcturus glows a warm orange — easy to identify by color alone. To find it, "follow the arc to Arcturus": trace the curve of the Big Dipper's handle outward.

Best season: April through July, high overhead in May. Cultural note: Its light was used to ceremonially open the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.

4. Vega (Magnitude 0.03) — The Summer Anchor

Constellation: Lyra (the Harp). The brightest star of the Summer Triangle (with Deneb and Altair). Clean blue-white, fifth-brightest overall. Around 14,000 years ago Vega was the North Star, and it will be again in about 12,000 years.

Best season: July through September, directly overhead in August. Cultural note: The first star ever photographed (1850, William Bond at Harvard).

5. Capella (Magnitude 0.08) — The Winter Sentinel

Constellation: Auriga (the Charioteer). The most northerly of the very bright stars — circumpolar from anywhere north of Atlanta. Look high overhead in winter, slightly yellow. It's actually a binary system, indistinguishable to the naked eye.

Best season: November through March, almost directly overhead in January. Cultural note: Named from the Latin for "little she-goat."

6. Rigel (Magnitude 0.13) — Orion's Bright Foot

Constellation: Orion (the Hunter). Marks the lower-right corner of Orion's body. A blue-white supergiant 860 light-years away — the light reaching your eye tonight left during the Crusades. Its blue contrasts sharply with Betelgeuse's red on the opposite shoulder.

Best season: December through March. Cultural note: "Rigel" comes from the Arabic rijl al-jabbār, "the foot of the giant."

7. Procyon (Magnitude 0.34) — The Little Dog Star

Constellation: Canis Minor (the Lesser Dog). Forms the Winter Triangle with Sirius and Betelgeuse. A clean white star, rising shortly before Sirius — its Greek name means "before the dog." Only 11.5 light-years from Earth.

Best season: December through April. Cultural note: Mentioned in Babylonian astronomical texts from the 2nd millennium BC.

8. Betelgeuse (Magnitude 0.45) — The Variable Red Giant

Constellation: Orion (the Hunter). Marks Orion's upper-left shoulder, unmistakably red — the most colorful first-magnitude star. A red supergiant nearing the end of its life; may go supernova within the next 100,000 years. In late 2019 it dimmed dramatically in "The Great Dimming."

Best season: December through March. Cultural note: The name comes from a mistranslation of an Arabic phrase, possibly meaning "armpit of the giant."

9. Altair (Magnitude 0.77) — The Eagle's Eye

Constellation: Aquila (the Eagle). Completes the Summer Triangle with Vega and Deneb. One of the fastest-rotating stars known — its day is only 9 hours, which flattens it into an oblate spheroid. At 16.7 light-years, one of the closest naked-eye stars.

Best season: July through September. Cultural note: Central to the Tanabata legend — the cowherd separated from Vega the weaver by the Milky Way.

10. Aldebaran (Magnitude 0.85) — The Bull's Eye

Constellation: Taurus (the Bull). Marks the bright orange eye of Taurus, within (but not part of) the Hyades cluster. An aging red giant about 65 light-years away. To find it, follow the three stars of Orion's belt up and to the right.

Best season: November through March. Cultural note: "Aldebaran" comes from the Arabic al-dabarān, "the follower," because it follows the Pleiades. Pioneer 10 will pass nearby in about 2 million years.

Tonight's Visibility From the US

What you can see tonight depends on date and latitude. Roughly:

  • Winter (Dec–Feb) — Sirius, Rigel, Betelgeuse, Procyon, Aldebaran, Capella all visible. Richest sky of the year.
  • Spring (Mar–May) — Arcturus rising east, winter stars setting west, Vega climbing late.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug) — The Summer Triangle (Vega, Altair, Deneb) overhead. Arcturus still in the west.
  • Fall (Sep–Nov) — Capella rising, Vega and Altair setting. Fewest first-magnitude stars.

FAQ

Why isn't the North Star (Polaris) on this list?

Polaris is only magnitude 1.98 — bright enough to see easily but not in the top ten. Its fame comes from sitting almost exactly at the celestial pole, not from raw brightness.

Can I see all ten of these from a city?

Mostly yes. The top six (Sirius, Arcturus, Vega, Capella, Rigel, Procyon) are bright enough to punch through moderate light pollution. Aldebaran and Altair require a darker site to look impressive. Canopus needs the southern US, period.

What's the difference between apparent magnitude and absolute magnitude?

Apparent magnitude is how bright a star looks from Earth. Absolute magnitude is how bright it would be at a standard distance of 10 parsecs (32.6 light-years). Rigel has an apparent magnitude of 0.13 but an absolute magnitude of −7 — among the most luminous stars known.

Are these the same ten brightest stars worldwide?

Almost. The global top ten also includes Achernar, Alpha Centauri, and Hadar, all in the southern hemisphere. The ten listed here are the brightest visible from US latitudes, which is what most readers want.
