Do Star Maps Show the Moon and Planets?

The Short Answer

Some commercial star maps show the Moon and planets, while others focus only on the fixed-star sky. OwnStarMap's current core star map does not plot the Moon or planets. It uses stellar catalogue records, converts their positions for the selected time and observer location, removes stars below the horizon, and projects the remaining stellar view onto the poster.

That limit matters. A map can accurately represent its star layer without being a complete simulation of every object that was visible. The product preview is the source of truth for what will appear on an OwnStarMap print; the site should not imply that an unshown Moon, planet, comet or satellite is part of the design.

Why Different Star Maps Give Different Answers

“Star map” describes a product category, not a universal technical specification. Providers can choose among several layers:

  • catalogue stars
  • constellation lines or labels
  • Milky Way artwork
  • the Sun and Moon
  • visible planets
  • horizon, landscape or atmospheric effects

Stars and solar-system objects do not come from the same calculation. Most catalogue stars change slowly on the timescale of a commemorative poster. The Moon and planets move rapidly against that background and need date-specific ephemerides. A renderer that plots them must calculate those objects separately and decide how to represent phase, size, brightness and visibility.

Leaving the Moon and planets out is therefore not the same as placing them incorrectly. It is a declared scope choice. The problem arises only when a seller claims those layers are present when the preview and rendering engine do not contain them.

What an OwnStarMap Poster Currently Shows

The current core poster can show:

  • stars from the bundled HYG-derived catalogue
  • only the catalogue subset above the horizon for the selected observer
  • constellation line artwork and names when the chosen style enables them
  • the selected date, time, location and personal inscription
  • decorative grid and visual treatments selected in the editor

The bundled catalogue contains 8,921 records. The renderer skips its Sol record, removes stars below the observer's geometric horizon and applies the selected shape boundary. That does not mean 8,921 stars appear on one poster: the drawn subset is smaller and depends on the chosen moment, location and shape.

The current core poster does not calculate or draw:

  • the Moon or its illuminated phase
  • Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus or Neptune
  • the Sun
  • comets, satellites, meteors or eclipses
  • weather, terrain, twilight or light pollution

These limits make the product a commemorative star chart, not a full planetarium simulation.

How to Check the Moon or Planets for Your Date

If a Moon phase or planet was important to the memory, verify it with a dedicated astronomy tool before writing the inscription. Stellarium is a free, open-source planetarium that lets you set a location, date and time and inspect solar-system objects. For higher-precision solar-system positions, NASA JPL Horizons publishes calculated ephemeris data.

A reproducible check takes a few minutes:

  1. Enter the event location, not your current location.
  2. Set the event's local date and time, then confirm the displayed time zone.
  3. Search for the Moon or planet.
  4. Check whether it is above the horizon at that instant.
  5. Note its constellation region and approximate direction.

You can then use that fact in the caption without suggesting the object is plotted. For example: “Under a waxing crescent in Lyon” is transparent when the Moon itself is absent from the artwork. “The crescent shown here” would not be accurate.

For historical lunar phases, use an astronomy source that states its time standard and location assumptions. A generic “full moon calendar” can be off by a local calendar date around midnight or across time zones.

Does Omitting the Moon Make the Star Layer Wrong?

No. A chart can correctly answer “which catalogue stars were geometrically above this observer's horizon?” without answering “what would the entire sky have looked like to the eye?” These are related but different questions.

The visual sky also depends on factors that a decorative chart usually omits: moonlight, sunlight, clouds, atmospheric extinction, terrain and artificial light. A full Moon can wash out faint stars in reality even though a geometric chart still draws them. Conversely, daylight can hide every star from the unaided eye even though those stars remain above the horizon.

What to Ask Any Provider

Before buying a map advertised with solar-system objects, ask:

  • Is the Moon calculated for the exact timestamp or added as decoration?
  • Does the image show the correct phase as well as the position?
  • Are planets calculated separately from the star catalogue?
  • Are below-horizon objects excluded?
  • Can the result be seen in a preview before payment?
  • Which elements are astronomical data and which are artistic overlays?

An answer should describe the current product, not merely what a planetarium could calculate in theory. If a provider names an ephemeris or offers a live preview, you can compare the result with Stellarium using the same location and timestamp.

Are planets labeled on the poster?

No. The current core poster does not calculate or label planets. Bright points on the chart come from the stellar catalogue.

Can I still make a map for a full-moon night?

Yes. The date, place and star layer can commemorate that night, and the inscription can mention the full Moon after you verify it with a dedicated astronomy source. The lunar disc itself will not appear in the current poster.

Are constellation lines real objects?

No. Constellation lines are conventional artwork connecting selected stars. The International Astronomical Union defines 88 official regions of the sky, but familiar stick figures can differ among cultures and applications. Lines and labels should be understood as an interpretive overlay.

Could the product add Moon and planet rendering later?

Features can change, so rely on the editor preview and current product documentation at the time of purchase. This page describes the core renderer checked on July 21, 2026.

Choose the Map for the Story You Want to Tell

If the exact Moon phase or a planetary conjunction is the main subject, choose a provider whose preview visibly includes those objects and whose method is documented. If the fixed-star pattern, location and inscription carry the memory, open the OwnStarMap editor and evaluate the actual preview before ordering.

The honest distinction is more useful than claiming that every celestial object appears: OwnStarMap currently maps the stellar layer, while a planetarium remains the right tool for a complete reconstruction of the solar-system sky.
